Grape leafroller
Sparganothis pilleriana Schiff.
Order Lepidoptera, Family Tortricidae
Host plants
Grapevine. In Bulgaria, it is found mainly in vineyards along the Danube River and the Black Sea coast, and in some years also in other regions.
Life cycle
It develops one generation per year. It overwinters as a young, non-feeding larva in a silken cocoon under old cracked vine bark, on the soil surface, and in plant debris. In the second half of April to early May, the larvae leave their overwintering sites and settle on young shoots.
The larvae develop over 35–45 days. Pupation usually begins in the first half to mid-June at the sites of damage. The pupal stage lasts 8–15 days. Adults fly from the second half of June to early August.
Egg laying
Eggs are laid mainly on the upper side of leaves, in groups of 40–50 up to 220, arranged like fish scales. They are covered with a secretion from the accessory reproductive glands of the female moth. The egg stage lasts 10–15 days, and after hatching, the larvae move to their overwintering sites.
Damage
The larvae chew on the leaves and tie several of them together with silken threads.
